Dog Mauls 11-Year-Old Boy
Animal Shelter Officer Great Dane To Likely Avoid Destruction

GROVE, Ark. -- An animal shelter officer said a great dane that mauled an 11-year-old boy likely won't be destroyed.
The boy received around 100 stitches after he was bitten and shaken by the dog at a dog walk.
According to a police report, the boy fell down while trying to catch his golden retriever that had gotten loose and then, the great dane attacked him.
Grove police gave the dog's owner a citation for "keeping a dog in an annoying manner and dog bite."

Are they serious? Had this dog been a "Pit Bull" or "Pit Bull type dog" (or German Shepherd, Rottweiler, or Doberman), this dog would have been euthanized no questions asked. The fact that this dog caused injuries resulting in 100 stitches and "bit and shook" the boy means this wasn't a simple nip, people.
Biting and shaking by dogs is how they kill their prey!

Ready for this e-mail exchange?
Scammer had an ad placed on Atlanta's Kijiji for a "Bull Terrier" that they were "giving away."
1) The person's located was listed as "Brooklyn, NY."
2) The dog was a mixed breed. Not a Bull Terrier and not a Pit Bull Terrier.
3) My initial e-mail was, "So are you in Brooklyn or Atlanta?"
And away we go......................
SCAMMER: "do u think that dogs are not put to sleep in atlanta?"
ME: "You posted an ad for a Bull Terrier needing a home (even though that puppy is NOT a Bull Terrier) due to the landlord. You posted this on ATLANTA'S Kijiji as in.......classified ads for people living in/around Atlanta, Georgia. Your location is posted as BROOKLYN, NY."
SCAMMER: "i postred it in pets wanted giving it away not callind animal control so in 10 day a pure breed or even mut can be killed."
ME: "1) Learn how to speak English before scamming someone.
2) You posted the ad on the ATLANTA, GEORGIA Kijiji website. Your location is BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. I've even attached the screenshot of your ridiculous advertisement.
3) Be sure and use the correct dog breed instead of making one up for the mixed breed you're holding in the picture (or the picture you stole off the internet)."
SCAMMER: "i guess people from the south are pretty dumb cause when we were all set free u stayed do u pick cotton i work in a bank and a single black women"
ME: "I'm sorry. I don't understand Ebonics, but hey if people are as dumb as you are that live in Brooklyn, I am damn proud to be living in ATLANTA, GEORGIA. If you are a "single black woman," why are you caucasian in your ad? "

Responsible dog breeding soapbox
I read something on a website today that made me shake my head. The breeder was irresponsible for a variety of things (including "if your puppy dies of parvo, bring it back, and we will replace it at no charge. NO money back!" Parvovirus can live in the soil, the carpet, the kennels, etc. so you're getting just another sick puppy that just hasn't shown symptoms yet.)

"We do not guarantee temperament as these things are in how the dogs are raised."
No. I think this "breeder" has this incorrect. Actually, I know he does.
Temperament, that is to say the dog's overall character, is genetic and not in how the dog is raised. A dog that is overly shy or overly aggressive is 9 times out of 10 genetic. Most responsible breeders will cull an animal from their stock that is overly shy or overly aggressive, and they would definitely take that animal back from a buyer.
For some time, I thought, "it's all in how they're raised," but recent events have made me realize it's in how they're raised, and it's in the dog's genetics, too.
